Year 1

In Year 1, we encourage and support children to develop independence and nurture a positive attitude to learning. The children will experience a range of fun and engaging learning activities.

The children have five English and five Mathematics lessons a week. Children are taught Phonics in RWI lessons five times a week, where we continue to follow the Read Write Inc programme introduced in Reception.

Children are taught RE, Music, PSHE and PE in the mornings.

In the afternoons, children are taught History or Geography, Science, and Spellings.

The children read weekly with a class teacher or teaching assistant. We encourage the children to read 5 times a week at home. Please can you log each time your child has read in their reading diary. Children have the opportunity to change their books every Friday. Class Library books can be changed once a week on your child's set reading day. Read, Write Inc books are changed on a Friday if the previous book has been returned.

Homework

Each week, there will be 6 spellings to practice in preparation for a Spelling Test every Thursday. These will be sent home on a Thursday. They do not need to be returned, but please ensure you help your child practice these words.

Children have a NumBots log in and we expect the children to spend at least 10 minutes a week on this app. We will increase this time accordingly throughout the year. We will be monitoring the usage of this and we will hand out Dojos for children who complete the time challenge.

Later on in Year 1, we will send out Phonics homework to further support the children ahead of the Phonics Screening Check.

Optional Homework is sent out at the start of each half term. This links to a topic we are learning in school. There will be Dojos and stickers rewarded for any completed work that is shown.

Children are expected to read at least 5 times a week at home and this must be recorded in their Reading Diaries.
